Video FAQ

Below are all our explainer videos.

Something missing that you want to know about? Ask! Send us a message or come to a class and we'll have a chat!

Please be aware that in all these videos I am only speaking on my own behalf, opinions expressed are purely my own, and that I am not speaking as a representative of anything other than IndomitableTKD Schools of Taekwondo.

1. Introduction to me!

A short introduction to me and my classes.
This was filmed in 2021 so, while it's all still relevant and correct, i've got a few more white hairs than I used to and one or two organisational changes have happened - see the later video #7 'update' to get up to speed on later developments!

2. Who is Taekwondo for?

*Spolier alert!*
It's very likely to be you!
Everyone who wants to do Taekwondo from ages 8 upwards including adults and teens can learn Taekwondo at IndomitableTKD and will be welcomed by the friendly atmosphere and community at all our classes. You do not need to be stong, fit, or flexible to practice Taekwondo - everything improves with time and effort and much of martial arts training and self defence training done at IndomitableTKD is about knowledge and learning how to use the physical resources you already have. Contrary to popular myth Taekwondo is NOT all about high kicking with no practical street skills or hand techniques, quite the opposite! Genuine traditional Taekwondo, as practised at IndomitableTKD includes many strikes and punches with closed fist, open hand and elbow, and kicks at all heights including middle low kicks! Taekwondo self defence includes awareness, evasion, breakouts from holds and locks - indeed we will regularly practice applying arm and wrist locks! - and fighting at very close range using a variety of practical tactics incluing the use of knees and elbows.
Traditional Taekwondo as practiced at IndomitableTKD is a very comprehensive martial art and self defence system appropriate for a very wide range of people!

3. What is Taekwondo good for?

Lots, as it turns out!
Proper Taekwondo training has a wide range of benefits - it is an engaging and popular martial art and effective self defence system using a wide range of movements including kicks at all height levels, an array of punches, strikes and grabs, and more general benefits from physical benefits like fitness, flexibility, strength and co-ordination to psychological and emotional benefits like stress-reduction, self-control and discipline, mental stimulation and social interaction.

4. Is Taekwondo just kicking?

Also, "I saw Taekwondo during the Olympics and it looked weird."

Taekwondo is sometimes used as a single word, sometime split into it's three parts which have kind of fluffy conceptual meanings but are basically:

Tae - meaning 'kick'

Kwon - meaning 'punch' or 'strike'

Do - meaning 'art' or 'method'

So Taekwondo means roughly "Art of kicking and punching".

Taekwondo, when practiced correctly as we do at IndomitableTKD, is an incredibly varied and useful martial art and self defence system, appropriate for traditional practice and for modern self defence purposes. We use a wide range of techniques that include the use of the feet, knees, elbows, fists, palms. The idea that Taekwondo is solely focussed on high kicking is a myth that comes from the specialised rules used for olympic style Taekwondo which strongly favour high kicks. At IndomitableTKD we use ALL the weapons of traditional Taekwondo from low stamping kicks to the feet up to fingertip strikes to the eyes and head-grabs! All useful and relevant tools for the modern self defence enthusiast and martial artist.

5. Will I have the energy for Taekwondo training?

Believe me I feel this one!
It's a really valid concern - you want to do something fulfilling and enriching for yourself, but you've got to do other things that sap your energy and you feel like you just don't have anything left for anything other than vegetating on the sofa!
The Taekwondo martial art and self defence training we commonly practice at IndomitableTKD is also makes a great fitness and conditioning workout! Improving your fitness will also increase your energy and stamina levels and all students are coached and encouraged to work at a pace that is appropriate for their individual current levels of fitness while building and improving it.

6. What is a class like?

Pretty good, if you're asking me!

But it's a perfectly normal concern, especially when you know that all martial arts classes have their own particular ways.
Even in the same art and organisation you'll find that each Instructor has his or her own style and methods of teaching their class.

So even if you've trained before it's very likely that my 'way' is quite different to what you've experienced previously - hopefully in a good way!
All IndomitableTKD classes are open to new beginners who can be welcomed into any class and easily integrated into the lesson and will not have to do anything outside their capabilities. The aim of training at IndomitableTKD is to help grow and develop every student and that starts at their very first class where everyone who comes along for a free trial class will find that, with a little guidance and help from our expert instructor, they are capable of much more that they thought!

7. Update!

In this video filmed in 2025 I cover the changes that we've made since going independent.
IndomitableTKD is a local and student-orientated martial arts, taekwondo and self-defence school. It holds it's gradings locally in Bedford and is able to promote students to nationally recognised black belt grades. It is seen as a valued member of the International Taekwondo council (ITC) and the Taekwondo Council UK (TCUK) both of which are National Governing Bodies (NGB's) for Taekwondo.

8. What are the costs, how do I join?

At IndomitableTKD we never use contracts or direct debits, all students are free to pause or stop their training at any time without penalty or obligation - we want all our students to be happy and engaged with our teaching and classes, all the students you meet in our classes will be there because they want to be and because they enjoy and benefit from it.

9. Will the class be full of kids?

When I first started there were no after-school martial arts classes and very few specifically 'for kids' classes.

Wow, that makes me feel old!

Now, in my purely subjective experience, most martial arts classes are geared towards kids, is IndomitableTKD like that too?
IndomitableTKD teaches the same traditional and practical martial art of Taekwondo to all it's students regardless of age - unlike many martial arts classes, of all kinds, which have watered down and simplified their art so as to be able to specialize in teaching children.
This means that, though there will be some children in most classes, the martial arts and self defence we teach at IndomitableTKD will be the same genuine practical Taekwondo that we would teach in an adults class, and that all our adult students learn and progress just fine and are not hampered by the presence of children in the class as they might be elsewhere.

10. What if I make mistakes?

No-one likes getting things wrong, especially when other people are around to see, but if you're going to learn anything new then you have to expect a few mistakes along the way!

Martial arts training can often suffer from excessive machismo, this is certainly what my experience of being a student was like - is it still like that now i'm the Instructor?
At IndomitableTKD we believe in educating and building our students not just physically but also in terms of their knowledge of tactics and applications, and in their confidence and self-respect. We know that everyone makes mistakes and we help our students to grow and improve. This means that IndomitableTKD is a great place for people who are completely new to martial arts and self defence and want to learn in a supportive, positive and enjoyable atmosphere.

11. What are contact levels like in your classes?

This is a very reasonable thing to be concerned about!
Maybe you've been to other classes that weren't right for you, maybe you've seen 'Cobra Kai'!
Maybe you're just worried about stepping into the unknown - it's all natural and completely reasonable.

So what kind of contact levels do we use?
The right ones I think!
At IndomitableTKD we take the safety of all our students seriously while also training our students in practical self defence and resilience. We practice semi-contact when students are sparring, but build full contact power levels in our techniques by using training aids and equipment such as focus pads, kick shields and breaking boards. In this way we are able to keep our students reasonably safe without softening the traditionally rigourous art we practice.

12. I'm not a violent person, why should I learn Taekwondo?

Good, i'm glad to hear it!
There are plenty of 'peaceful' benefits to practicing Taekwondo - health, fitness, confidence etc
You may (hopefully) never need to defend yourself, but what if you do?
Shouldn't good people win?
At IndomitableTKD we regularly practice a variety of self defence scenarios and a range of potential solutions and escapes. We believe that escape from a conflict is the best outcome and that violence should only ever be a last resort - but if we need to use violence then we should be good at it! This means that we want to train 'good' people who don't want to hurt anyone unless they absolutoely have to, some thing which fits perfectly with out moral virtues of self-control and integrity!

13. I trained elsewhere / years ago, do I have to reset to white belt?

A lot of organisations have very specific rules about this, and often they'll present their rules as 'the' rules.
But in fact every group makes it's own decisions on how they handle this issue, at IndomitableTKD we just want what's best for our students.
At IndomitableTKD we recognise and respect other arts and organisations, and when a student comes to us with experience from elsewhere we respect them and what they have acomplished. There is no equivalency in grades between one martial art and another so someone who had achieved a high grade in an art such as Judo or Karate would still be a beginner in Taekwondo, though their experience in martial arts training generally would be of great help to them in quickly climbing the ranks. Within Taekwondo there are many different organisations with a variety of standards, when a student from one of these comes to us we have a conversation with them as an individual and come to a conclusion as to what way forward would benefit them the most - that might mean continuing their training at the grade they earned in their previous class or it might mean begining again at white belt. Our emphasis is always on finding the right way to achieve the best long-term outcome for our students and we recognise that different ways will be appropriate for different people.

14. If I join your class will you try to up-sell me lots of stuff?

No.
'Stuff' is available if you want it, but i'm not going to chase you for sales!
You'll need a uniform when you want to start grading, but even then it'll be you coming to me to buy one ,not me coming to you to sell one.
At IndomitableTKD we never engage in any kind of hard-sell, we never use contracts or even direct debits. We believe in giving our students an honest and comprehensive knowledge of all the costs involved in training with us so that they can make fully informed and correct decisions. We want all the students in every class to be fully enagaged and so we make sure that anyone who wishes to pause or discontinue their training is free to do so at any time without any penalty or notice period. And of course students who leave are always welcome to come back and resume their training with us!

15. Can you do Taekwondo if you can't do high kicks?

High kicks?
Let's do 'good' kicks first and worry about height later (if at all!)
It is a myth that Taekwondo is all about high kicks, it is even a myth that Taekwondo is all about kicks! In proper traditional Taekwondo, of the kind we practice at IndomitableTKD, the majority of the kicks in formal disciplines are aimmed at middle height (the opponent's torso) because there are many good targets at this height and because kicking at roughly this height uses the maximum range of the leg, allowing a Taekwondoist to maintain excellent tactical mobility and hit an opponent whilst being out of their punching reach. Second to middle height kicks in formal disciplines are low height kicks aimmed at targets such as the groin, knees and shins. These kicks are frequently involved in our self-defence work and are tactically very useful in reducing an opponents mobility and even knocking them to the ground. Least common are the high kicks for which, ironically, Taekwondo has mistakenly become most known for. Aside from their obvious use in attacking the head, these kicks are impressive to see and so get frequently used in demonstrations, promotional and advertising materials, and in entertainments such as films.
At IndomitableTKD we know that not everyone will be able to do high kicks due to their age, phyical condition or other factors, and we make sure our students know that high kicking is only really a very small part of real Taekwondo and that they will be able to practice and even achieve black belt without ever having to do a high kick!

16. What are the belts (ranks) in Taekwondo?

It seemed like such a simple question...

Also, when you pause this video on facebook it just pauses, but when you pause this embedded video it'll put links to other videos over the top!
Instead of pausing, hold down the dot on the timeline at the bottom of the video then you can pause it without any overlays.
If the timeline is barely a line at all then maximise the video.
The grade (belt) colours at IndomitableTKD are: White, yellow, green, blue, red and black. Once a student achieves their '1st Dan' they continue to traing and grade, collecting gold 'Dan bars' on the ends of their black belt.
At IndomitableTKD we know that everyone's taekwondo journey will be different and that different people progress at different rates, we never push people to grade before they are ready - in fact we do not allow people to grade unless we believe they are ready to pass! Long tern development and growth are key and gradings should be and are a way to regulate a student's training in order to create the smoothest path in their progression. No student is made to feel like they need to 'keep up' with others, rather that they are working for themselves and for their own benefit, and that this is what truely matters.

17. Can parents train with their kids?

And of course the answer is yes (unless it's no).
At IndomitableTKD we welcome parents joining in and training with their kids, it sets a great example of how to learn something new and possibly quite difficult, how to cope with making mistakes and persevere, while at the same time giving the parent and child a shared interest.
It's great for the parent to learn the effective martial art and self defence system of Taekwondo just like anyone else, but it has the added bonus of demonstrating to their child that Taekwondo is not 'just for kids' which helps them to sustain their efforts and interest long-term and get great results!

18. How often do you have to train?

I've got four classes per week for you to choose from, and you're welcome to come to any of them.
But how many classes do you have to do to make training worth doing?
At IndomitableTKD we understand that everyone has a life and committments outside of Taekwondo and we aim to be as flexibile as possible in helping people to train and learn the popular and effective martial art and self defence of Taekwondo. All our students can come to any of our classes, we do not require bookings or for students to commit to a particular class - all are open to them. Obviously more training is better than less training, but also a little training is much better than none! We support all our students in growing and progressing at their own speed, and if they're not able to train very frequently that's fine; they can still learn and progress and we value the time and effort they are able to give.

19. What if I have to skip a class once in a while?

Ok, we know that regular and consistent training is important. But you've got other things in your life - work, holidays, exams! What if you can't make it to your normal class?
At IndomitableTKD Schools of Taekwondo we know that our students have a life and committments and we do our best to accomodate them - students are allowed to come to any of our classes without prior booking and we use an adaptive payment system which means that students don't pay for classes they can't attend. The is makes IndomitableTKD really good value and one of the most pro-student martial art schools.

20. Will I get hurt?

A fair question!
Some people actively expect to hurt and be hurt or it's not 'proper' training, some people train because they specifically want NOT to get hurt!
What's the score at ITKD?
At IndomitableTKD Schools of Taekwondo we take the health and wellbeing of our students very seriously and employ numerous health and safety measures to look after them. All martial arts and self defence training carries a risk but we do our best to minimise that risk while still teaching our students effective Taekwondo self defence.

21. What do I need to wear?

Do I need a uniform straight away?
Do I have to train in bare feet?
What do I wear for my first class?
You don't need a uniform until you're ready to do your first grading. Until then you're absolutely fine to train in suitable plain clothes that you'd be happy to do jogging or any light exercise in.
You can wear your trainers or have bare feet, either is fine.

22. Which is the best martial art?

A controversial question that floats around the internet endlessly.
But what's the answer?
It's really a matter of personal preference but Taekwondo as taught at IndomitableTKD Schools of Taekwondo is a great choice for anyone interested in learning an effective martial art and self defence system.

22. Our communications Policy.

Honestly, not as boring as it sounds - how will we deal with you if you get in touch, and do you even need to?

23. What's a grading?

'Grading' is the word most martial arts use when refering to the test their students take in order to be promoted.
What are ours like?

24. Can martial arts change behaviour?

You may have seen some bold claims out there about what martial arts training can do to improve a student's behaviour - usually this means kids!
But is it true?

25. Our photography policy.

Also not as boring as it sounds! Like many groups, we will periodically take pictures of our classes in action - but do you have to be in those pictures?

26. Does a 'fancy title' mean you'll get a better teacher?

You've seen an advert for a class and the Instructor has some very impressive titles to their name must be a great class right?
Maybe, maybe not...
